THE HEADLINE RULE

120 hours total.
20 hours at night.

For NSW learner drivers under 25, Transport for NSW requires at least 120 hours of supervised driving. At least 20 of those hours must be completed at night, between sunset and sunrise.

Under 25
120 supervised hours, including at least 20 night hours.
25 or over
You do not have to log a set number of driving hours, although NSW still recommends plenty of supervised practice before the test.

Credits, exemptions and special circumstances can change an individual learner’s requirement. Always check the current NSW Government guidance for your situation.

The logbook records time.
Use the time well.

NSW requires younger learners to build a substantial amount of supervised experience before the driving test. The point is not simply to accumulate minutes on familiar roads.

NSW guidance encourages learners to get practical experience across different road types, times of day and traffic levels. That means gradually broadening practice as skills improve.

Waylo is designed around that same idea: build the experience, not just the hours.

PRACTICE WITH PURPOSE

Use the 120 hours to build variety.

A useful practice mix changes over time. Start where the learner is comfortable, then progressively add more varied real-world situations alongside professional instruction.

Different roads

Move beyond the same suburban loop into varied local roads, higher-speed roads and unfamiliar routes when appropriate.

Night driving

The 20-hour requirement gives learners repeated exposure to reduced visibility, glare and different traffic patterns.

Changing traffic

Build from quieter periods towards busier traffic rather than doing every hour at the easiest time of day.

Everyday situations

Parking, merging, roundabouts, unfamiliar intersections and ordinary family trips all add useful variety.

LOGBOOK OPTIONS

How NSW learners record their hours.

NSW learner drivers can use the paper learner logbook or the official Roundtrip logbook app. Transport for NSW says Roundtrip is the only official digital logbook app currently accepted for submitting NSW learner hours.

Waylo is separate from the official licensing record. It does not replace the NSW logbook. Its role is to help learners and families see the breadth of experience being built across roads, conditions, traffic and situations.
